The very 1st hand of the 1st table. Obviously I was not involved in this hand, but it shows how paying attention closely to every hand early on can give you an important read on other players (in this case – Fabricest is obviously a terrible player who is in way over his head and is very likely to spew off his newfound chips – hopefully I can take advantage of this later on).

Early on in a sit-n-go at a full (or almost-full table) I play a hand like 88 in early or middle position pretty conservatively. When Cash Carter makes that ridiculous overbet raise there’s no way I’m calling off 1/6 of my chips preflop and out-of-position. I do however take note that he raised 13 times the big blind with AJo!

I make a standard raise with AJ and get called by Cash Carter who I already know has some fishy tendencies. I flop top pair but there are a lot of draws on the flop so I bet around ¾ the pot and he calls. On the turn I pick up an open-ended straight draw but he could have a lot of hands that have me in bad shape. After he checks I check behind to try and keep the pot small (unless a non-spade 8 or K hits the river). The river 9 is not that likely to have helped him but he makes a pretty big bet. I decide to call him although this isn’t totally automatic, I might fold here if I knew the opponent was tight.

A very similar hand against Cash where I check behind on the turn for pot control. Since he called the flop there’s also a good chance he has either an ace or eight. His river all-in is pretty suspicious (maybe he turned the 8?) but I’m not going to bother looking him up here, I’ll wait for a better spot.

Here I defend my BB with A2c against Cash since I’m pretty deepstacked with the blinds so low. When I call a raise from the BB heads-up I probably check to the preflop raiser 80% of the time so I do so here. His small bet of less then ½ the pot usually means he’s either very weak or he has a monster and is hoping I come back over the top. I check-raise to test him and he quickly folds.

I make a standard raise in the cutoff with AK, fabrice who has played wild and crazy all game calls from the SB. I get a very good flop and bet it strongly, he calls with who knows what. On the turn I still feel like I’m ahead although I’m a little nervous when he calls another big bet. The river gives me the straight though and I feel I have to bet it given the unliklihood he has a 6. In retrospect maybe I should have checked, since his play was so unstable its possible he would check-raise me all-in with the same Ace-high straight, and then I’d have an awful dilemma.

I raise 55 in fairly early position which is debatable but I like to raise 1st in to a pot 95% of the time. When I get reraised, often I would call and hope to flop a 5, but here my stack (and my opponents) just aren’t deep enough to warrant calling.

I hate calling raises (especially against early position players) with Ace-rag (anything under 10) out of position. I think in most cases it’s a losing-money leak (although I would certainly call sometimes and re-raise sometimes against raises I thought were likely to be steals).

I knew SiVTEC was an excellent player. His open-limp with only 6BB’s left was extremely suspicious, and highly indicative of him having a huge hand. With this information, I came very close to check-folding the flop, but for some reason I made the stupid decision to double up a dangerous opponent.

One of the key hands at this first table. If Cash had raised bigger (3 or 4 times the BB) I might have folded preflop, but from the SB I felt AJ warranted a call for only 1.5 more blinds. On the flop I like my hand but still want to be very cautious about AK/AQ in particular. When it checks around I’m not sure if both Cash and Johnny missed or if one of them is slowplaying. On the turn I check again planning to probably call one of them down if they bet. However Cash bets a very weak amount, and Johnny just calls. If Johnny had a big hand he would probably raise here given the number of draws. It looks much more like Johnny is drawing and that Cash probably is weak and was trying to steal the pot. Now that they’ve both bet, I decide there’s enough money in the pot to risk going all-in, as just calling would be disastrous if one of them rivered me and I don’t think its that likely that either one of them has me beat on the turn. Johnny’s call of my all-in was shocking to say the least.

Playing a lot of shorthanded blind battles against a top player like SiVTEC, I have to vary my play so I limp and raise some of the time with good and bad hands alike. Here I limp with a pretty good hand and then check-call the A-high hand hoping to get a cheap showdown (I probably would have folded to a decent river-bet).

By checking the turn here, I help ensure that the pot will be small (since I’m not too confident in my K9 here), and I make my river bet look suspicious (I could be trying to steal the pot since he hasn’t shown any strength) which enables me to get a pretty big call from just his A-high.

I make a terrible river call here but make an important note – I called because I thought if Johnny had KJ or an Ax hand he would have raised me preflop. When I saw how passively he had played his KJ here, I thought if I could get heads-up with him I could run him over.

I had just raised the past 2-3 times I was in the SB so here I limp with KJ. On the flop I’m probably ahead but possibly way behind so I check-call. On the turn after he checks behind I think he may have a piece of the board but be behind me (jack with worse kicker most likely) so I put out a small value bet on the river.

After sitting out the first 15 hands or so, I get antsy preflop with Q9s (a personal favorite hand) and the fairly short SB calls. I flop a gutshot and try to put pressure on the flop but he calls. On the turn I pick up a double-gutshot, and I decide that with the straight outs plus the chance he might fold anything below top pair, I pressure him for his whole stack. Mistake as he calls/pushes with just a flush draw that happens to be ahead of my Q-high. After this hand I was disgusted with myself for spewing off half my stack so early and not taking the free card on the turn.

Not sure about this play, but with the blinds going up to 100 I wanted to have a big enough stack where I could potentially reraise all-in with a hand like AK and have the original raiser fold junk, but be forced to call with decent/dominated hands like KQ/AT. So I pushed this button with J8 which increased my stack by over 10%, and had a good chance of being live cards if I got called by a blind.

Another very tough decision. Annette is the only player who can bust me at this point so I play a little cautiously by just calling her preflop raise. However this leaves her in command of the hand and she keeps the pressure on with a strong flop bet. I have a double gutshot along with a backdoor flush draw and an overcard, a pretty strong drawing hand all-in-all. I felt like my best plays were either to fold or push though, since a call would cost me a lot of chips and she might very well push the turn. Still not sure whether my fold here was the right play.

Many aggressive players love to push from the BB with around 10BB’s or less when you complete the SB, regardless of what they have. Since I like to limp from the SB with mediocre hands like 87, to combat this I usually limp big pairs in similar situations (only when its been folded to the SB).

Preflop raiser seemed solid so calling QJ from the BB is marginal at best, but since it was sooted I decided to make the call. Again once I hit top pair I felt committed for the rest of the raiser’s chips, since in a worst-case scenario if he had me beat I’d still have a manageable stack, so I planned to c-raise all in. His all-in flop bet was a little disconcerting but if I don’t call with top pair here then my preflop call is really bad. Winning this hand puts me in great position to contend for the seat, which I start to think about. I want to at least maintain my chip position while 2 more players are eliminated, and then battle it out 3-handed and hope for the best.

SamE’s stack size is a real key to this play. After the flop he has around 2200 left which is still plenty, but if he calls my river bet and loses he’s down to 1450 or so and facing a very uphill climb. On the flop when Sam bet out I thought he had a hand, most likely a T but he’s capable of bluffing or having a 2 there. Once Monster is out of the way I decided to call and try repping the 2. On the turn I planned to c-raise him a smallish amount if he bet – with only a T he would have a very difficult decision since it would look like his stack would be on the line. He smartly checked behind. On the river I could have made either boat with my 2 or a flush with my draw so given how the hand has played out I have to make a big bet here and hope that he folds. I’m pretty sure he had just the ten but he thought a long time before folding, I think he suspected I was out-of-line but just couldn’t risk the call.

I’m not sure how wide a range Sam is pushing here with 12BB’s on the button, but its probably way ahead of A6, and if not, its not far behind as A6 isn’t a big favorite against much of anything.

Normally I raise this preflop heads-up but I decide to just call, and then call the big raise in position. After flopping middle pair heads-up I decide I have to push since after her flop continuation bet the pot was pretty big already. Unfortunately she has AQ, but I still have 5 outs twice (about 20% chance) to suckout and end it right there.
